This is the first post in a series about the Thankyou Payroll team’s rapid growth and changes after their successful equity crowdfunding campaign in 2017. We’re going to start with their marketing manager, and social enterprise champion, Catarina Gutierrez.
Hi. I’m Catarina. I’m a bonafide social enterprise nerd and storyteller with a passion for change. I joined the team in March 2018, on the year anniversary of my return to Wellington, one of my favourite cities in the world!
Before my arrival at Thankyou Payroll, I worked at Bicycle Junction, Wellington’s urban bike shop, as their marketing coordinator and events manager. A year prior, I lived in Ōtautahi/Christchurch and worked with small businesses to boost economic development in the disaster-stricken region. That was with Ministry of Awesome (loyal Thankyou Payroll customer), a co-working space and foundational contributor to a city I truly enjoyed. I also made my mark on the bike scene as an advocate and urbanist, hoping to boost Christchurch’s profile as a bike town.
Before moving to New Zealand, I lived in the United States where I learned a valuable lesson: social enterprises are the only kind of companies I want to work for. It’s 100% possible to make money and be a force for good in the world. That was revolutionary in my career path and how I decided to build skill and accelarate my career in the “sector”.
Social enterprises are the only kind of companies I want to work for. You can make money and be a force for good in the world.
At the time, I worked for founding B-Corp members (stands for Benefit Corporation — more on them here) Better World Books and Catchafire (not related to the band). At those businesses, social and environmental “good” was embedded into every operational and business task. We had meetings about our values and mission statements, we co-designed programmes and activities that would facilitate impact, and we would practice what we preached day in and day out — to clients, partners, donors, sponsors, EVERYONE. It was heartening to see everyone around me working for the same cause — to effect change through the way we do business.
I now work as the Digital Marketing Manager in the sales and marketing team. It’s a new team thanks to the support of our shareholders in the Pledgeme equity crowdfunding campaign. I’ve been working on things like our new marketing website, new events and conferences, creating our content strategy and updating our marketing to fit a new target audience. It’s a LOT of work but so rewarding when you have a talented team behind you and a mission you believe in. I have my work cut out for me but am delighted to see my work pay off in a BIG way.
